Take a Stand Against Rep. Todd Akin

Here's how Todd Akin — a member of Congress and Senate candidate in Missouri — defends legislation that denies women access to safe and legal abortion even in cases of rape: "First of all, from what I understand from doctors, [pregnancy from rape] is really rare. If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.” He should tell that to the 32,000 women who become pregnant as the result of rape every year.

Rep. Akin needs to hear from all of us just how ignorant, cruel, and deeply offensive his comments are. He and everyone who shares his dangerous ideology need to know that millions of women and men will be working day and night this election season to keep them out of power.

"Legitimate" Rape?

To Rep. Akin,

I saw what you said about "legitimate" rape not causing pregnancy. By now you've been told you're wrong. You've been told that about 32,000 women become pregnant as the result of rape each year. You've been told just how stunning your ignorance is to the rest of us.

I doubt that you'll let the facts change your dangerous ideology, so here are a few other things you should know.

It's horrifying to label some rapes not "legitimate." Your comment shows just how little compassion you have for the millions of survivors of rape and sexual assault in Missouri and nationwide.

Nobody with your cruel and deeply offensive views belongs in the Senate.

Now that you've shown your true colors, you can bet that millions of us, in Missouri and beyond, are going to do whatever it takes to keep you out of power. You, and everyone who shares your desire to prevent women from making their own private medical decisions.

Our anger is legitimate, and so are our votes.

Signed,
