The Missouri Legislature sent Gov. Eric Greitens a budget measure that undermines the family planning program.
Governor Greitens pledged to bring a new approach to Jefferson City — this is his chance to make good on that promise. Urge him to reject the politically motivated effort to block access to family planning services by vetoing House budget bills 10 and 11.
By telling thousands of low-income patients that they cannot go to the health care provider of their choice, the Missouri Legislature is leaving them with nowhere to go for birth control and sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing and treatment. That’s unacceptable.
It gets worse: In order to disqualify these providers, legislators chose to reject millions in federal family planning funds and use scarce state taxpayer dollars instead. In a tough budget year, lawmakers chose to undermine Missourians’ access to family planning care even though it costs more money.
Please urge Governor Greitens to stand up for the thousands of Missourians who rely on the family planning program for health care and reject these fiscally irresponsible budget bills.
Dear Governor Eric Greitens
For thousands of low-income Missourians, the family planning program is the only way to access birth control and sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing and treatment. The legislature's attempt to undermine the program is bad for Missourians' health and our budget -- every $1 invested in family planning yields $7 in savings. In addition, lawmakers chose to reject millions in federal family planning funds and use scarce state taxpayer dollars just to disqualify key providers in the program. In a deceptive attempt to link the program to abortion, the budget contains language that could keep patients from getting preventive care from a health center that provides "abortion services." House Bills 10 & 11 include "referral" in the definition of abortion services, which could disqualify nearly every provider in the state.
