Preserve the right to privacy for Florida women

Florida’s state constitution includes an explicit privacy clause that has served for decades as the first line of defense against attacks on our right to safe and legal abortion. Repeatedly, courts in Florida have struck down attempts by politicians to undermine a woman’s right to control her body by citing this critically important clause.

But now anti-abortion activists have launched an all-out assault on our right to privacy by trying to get the Constitution Revision Commission (CRC) to weaken or eliminate the privacy clause. Their obvious goal is to take away women’s reproductive rights – we can’t let that happen!

Add your name to urge the Constitution Revision Commission (CRC) not to weaken privacy protections for Floridians. We must preserve the right to privacy for Florida women!

We must preserve the right to privacy for Florida women

Dear Commissioners

We the undersigned urge the Constitution Revision Commission (CRC) not to weaken privacy protections for Floridians.

Because Florida's Constitution contains an explicit right to privacy, the Florida Supreme Court has long held that it "embraces more privacy interests, and extends more protection...than does the Federal Constitution," which contains only an implicit right to privacy. We need those protections for our privacy rights now more than ever.

The Florida Supreme Court has consistently ruled that laws restricting a woman's right to decide whether to continue a pregnancy or have an abortion violate the explicit privacy clause of the Florida Constitution. CRC members should not attempt to take away this fundamental right from women. The Florida Supreme Court is vested with interpreting and applying the Florida Constitution, and it has spoken.

Regardless of your religious or ideological views on abortion, we demand you preserve our fundamental right to privacy in Florida.

Sincerely,
